This course teaches students all about using the powerful and versatile freeware intrusion detection system Snort, from how to install, configure, and run the basic program to customization for many special uses. Hands-on exercises are included that will challenge both the novice and seasoned Snort user so that students will feel confident in their ability to effectively utilize Snort for their site's specific needs when they get back to the office.

The course starts with an overview of Snort, including the installation process and an examination of its various modes of operation. Students are then taught the basic, critical skill of writing and amending rules in Snort. From there the class looks at how to configure Snort as an intrusion detection system and examines its various capacities for capturing different types of output. Finally, the instructor addresses some more advanced topics including steps to make Snort more efficient.
