As I look at all the spring yarns coming in, I continue to marvel at how many different types of yarn there are. This season, I decided to treat myself and make a few sweaters for me. (That almost never happens!) One of the yarns that enticed me was Flash from Classic Elite. This mercerized marled cotton comes in some of the most amazing colorways I've ever seen - each one is more beautiful than the next! Another yarn I chose to knit with was Cinema from Artful Yarns, a Nylon/Cotton ribbon again in gorgeous colors. One of my favorite things about getting new yarns is seeing all the patterns that support them, and I picked Cinema in part due to one of their patterns. All in all, I am very excited about this seasons new yarns and patterns, and hopefully you'll all see me in my new sweaters sometime soon!

Silk!

Silk is a luxurious fiber with a fascinating history. Silkworms (primarily mulberry silkworms) produce silk when making their cocoons. These cocoons are then collected and unwound; the resulting filament is reeled or twisted together. The production of silk dates back to 2640 B.C. and the Chinese Empress Si Ling-chi, who developed the process of reeling from the cocoon. This secret was closely guarded for 3000 years, until 550 A.D. when two former missionaries smuggled silkworm eggs and mulberry tree seeds to Constantinople. From there, the secrets of silk spread across Europe from Spain to Sicily in the 8th century, then to Florence and Venice in the 14th century. There was an effort to bring silk production to the American colonies, and for a time Pennsylvania had a silk industry fostered by Benjamin Franklin, however the high cost of labor prevented its success.

Silk yarns are wonderful for spring due to their delicacy and light texture. At The Technicolor Sheep, we have many beautiful silk yarns this season including Bourette from Plassard, Mandalay from Reynolds, and Seta Moda, a silk ribbon from Schulana.

Bring in a copy of this email and receive 20% off your total purchase of any one of the following silk yarns: Bourette (Plassard), Mandalay (Reynolds), Seta Moda (Schulana), Silk Boucle (Karabella); OR receive 10% off your total purchase of any one of the following silk blends: Attitude (Classic Elite), Pima Silk (Cascade), Douceur et Soie (K1C2), Douceur Swirls (K1C2), Richesse et Soie (K1C2). (Not good with any other offer; good only once; expires May 15)
